Indications:
Severe chronic wind-cold-damp Bi pain (painful obstruction syndrome) with a predominance of cold obstructing the channels and collaterals. Presenting with sensation of coldness and numbness in the limbs, a combination of severe, fixed, stabbing and dull, achy, migrating pain, especially pain and weakness of the low back and knees, general weakness and stiffness, reduced mobility, swelling and pain in the joints, cold extremities, numbness, tingling, spasms, tremors, aversion to wind and cold, and all symptoms worse in wind or damp cold weather. Plum Flower Chinese Herbal Formula
Dosage:
Standard Dosage: 12 pills, 2 x day.
Clinical Dosage: Administer half an hour before or one hour after eating. The dosage should be very slowly increased from 4 to 12 pills two times daily to monitor the patient's response. May be used short-term for few days to a few weeks. This formula is similar to Xiao Huo Luo Dan in function, with the addition of many other strong wind cold damp clearing herbs. It is an extremely hot, pungent and dispersing formula that alleviates pain strongly, but may easily damage Yin. Watch for heat signs such as insomnia, restlessness, facial flushing, sweating and thirst. Is often administered in a rotation with a few days break after every week of treatment. Once the acute symptoms are resolved, this formula should be discontinued and replaced with a milder formula, such as Du Huo Ji Sheng Wan.

Contraindications:
Contraindicated during pregnancy, or with hemorrhagic disorders. Contraindicated in the absence of pronounced cold signs. Contraindicated for spontaneous sweating or night sweats. Contraindicated for Yin or fluid deficiency. Contraindicated for very weak or deficient patients. Use with caution in patients on anti-coagulant therapy. Use with caution in hypertension as Ma huang/ephedra may raise blood pressure in some cases. May aggravate irritability or insomnia in some patients due to presence of Ma Huang/Ephedra. Improper or excessive use of this formula may result in unwanted side effects.
